Career: Played in the big leagues for 20 seasons with six different teams, including the Dodgers in 1957 and 1958.

Did you know? Was the second Slovakian-born player to crack the big leagues; the first was Jack Quinn ... served in the US Army during WWII, missing the entire 1944 and '45 seasons ... hit a pair of triples with the bases loaded on May 1, 1949 ... hit for the cycle on August 2, 1950 ... batted a career-high .364 in 112 games for the Athletics in 1955, but did not have enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title ... only big leaguer to play for the Athletics in Philadelphia and Kansas City, the Dodgers in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, and the original Senators in Washington and Minnesota (as the Twins).

Post-game: Worked for Cleveland as a big league coach and minor league manager, and later for the Phillies as a scout and in their public relations department ... was inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1995 ... died on July 19, 1998 at the age of 77.
