Did you know? Credited by some as being the first big league player to use the round "pillow-style" catcher's mitt, the precursor to the modern catcher's gloves used today ... hit first big league home run off Cy Young on July 5, 1893 ... topped double-figures in steals four times in his career, with a high of 18 in 1892 ... saved the life of a drowning girl at Sheepshead Bay on September 5, 1895 and, tragically, later that month suffered a fractured spine while diving, an injury that ultimately ended his playing career.
Post-game: Worked for the Department of Water Works in Brooklyn, NY ... died of heart disease and pneumonia at age 63 on June 14, 1928.
