Bones Ely

Career: 
Played in the big leagues for 12 seasons with eight teams, including a 31-game stint with Brooklyn in 1891.

Did you know? Began big league career as a pitcher-outfielder in 1884, then switched to shortstop in 1890 ... hit a rare inside-the-park grand slam home run on May 8, 1897 ... served as the Pirates team captain in 1898 and for part of the following season ... led NL shortstops in errors in 1894 (79), fielding percentage in 1898 (.943) and defensive WAR in 1900 (2.5).

Post-game: Briefly managed and co-owned the Portland Browns of the upstart PCL, worked as a traveling salesman, owned a hotel in the Pacific Northwest, and later managed several businesses ... died at age 88 on January 10, 1952.
