John Ward

Career: Played in the big leagues for parts of 17 seasons with four teams, including Brooklyn in 1891 and 1892.

Did you know? Led the NL in earned run average as an 18-year old rookie in 1878, and wins, winning percentage and strikeouts the following season ... pitched a perfect game on June 17, 1880 ... organized baseball's first players union in 1885, the year he began playing shortstop and later second base exclusively ... stole a record (since broken) 111 bases in 1887 ... won back-to-back World Series championships with the New York Giants in 1888 and 1889.

Post-game: Built and maintained a successful law practice in Brooklyn, NY ... died of pneumonia at age 65 on March 4, 1925 ... was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1964.
